STREET SHOTS
Walshy, known artistically as Street Shots, is a Norwich-based photographer whose compelling work reflects his personal journey of resilience and transformation. From a tumultuous early life—being expelled from school, battling addictions, and experiencing homelessness—Walshy found solace and purpose through the lens of a camera. Although he didn't initially see himself as creative, others recognized his innate talent, and he began to channel his life experiences into powerful visual narratives. His passion for photography ignited while studying for a photography degree at university. Immersed in a creative environment and surrounded by talented individuals, Walshy felt truly happy and at home for the first time. Influenced by iconic photographers like Nick Knight, David Bailey and David LaChapelle, he began to hone his craft. Self-taught through YouTube tutorials during lockdown while living in a homeless hostel, his journey is a testament to his determination and love for the art form. A pivotal moment in Walshy's artistic career was his participation in a charity fundraising event for the Matthew Project, the organization that supported his rehabilitation. The success of this exhibition led to media attention, including features in local newspapers and an appearance on BBC Radio Norfolk. Walshy's work primarily utilizes photography to explore themes of emotion, mental health, and personal experience. His recent project, "Self," delves into his emotions surrounding years of undiagnosed mental health issues and addiction. He also excels in documentary-style photography, offering unique perspectives on marginalized communities and challenging conventional viewpoints. An experimental artist, Walshy enjoys playing with various styles and in-camera effects. Over time, his style has evolved to become more considered, with a strong emphasis on storytelling. Despite challenges like self-doubt and organizational hurdles - compounded by diagnoses of dyslexia and ADHD - he embraces his "organized chaos" as a catalyst for creativity. Walshy's achievements include founding Evolving Canvases, a community initiative aimed at promoting art as therapy for addiction recovery and mental health. His work has been exhibited at notable venues such as the Bluey Bluey Gallery and the Bishop Gardens at Norwich Cathedral. His dedication to using art as a tool for healing and awareness has garnered significant community support and engagement. In the short term, Walshy aims to continue experimenting and learning during his remaining university years. His long-term goals involve expanding Evolving Canvases, conducting community workshops with mental health practitioners, and offering programs to businesses focused on mental health awareness and substance misuse. Through his art, Walshy hopes to convey that change is always possible, regardless of one's circumstances or age. By raising awareness and breaking down stigmas, he contributes meaningfully to society and inspires others to overcome their own challenges. His artistic influences span from contemporary photographers like Nick Knight and David LaChapelle to legendary artists like Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, and Renaissance master Caravaggio. Given the opportunity, Walshy would love to collaborate with David LaChapelle, drawn to creating spectacular scenes involving diverse people. He also admires Nick Knight for his technical innovation and meticulous attention to detail, from whom he believes he could learn immensely.
