ALFIE WILSON
Alfie Wilson is an emerging artist from Cambridge, known for his messy, surrealist, and abstract expressionist style infused with dramatic narratives. Growing up in a working-class nuclear family with older parents, an older brother, and his grandmother, Alfie's upbringing was a blend of pragmatism and creative encouragement. While his mother embodied a relentless work ethic—pragmatic and materialistic due to past hardships—his brother and grandmother nurtured his curiosity and passion for education and culture. Inspired by his brother's bold decision to attend Chelsea Art School in London against their mother's wishes, Alfie began to seriously pursue his own artistic journey at the age of 16. Currently in the first year of his fine art degree, Alfie holds an Art A-level and is at the exciting beginning of his professional path. One of his most significant early experiences was organising a small exhibition with fellow students to showcase his largest A-level pieces—a moment that, while seemingly modest, meant the world to him. Alfie's work explores a vast array of themes and subjects, driven by his genuine obsession with almost every topic. He believes in the interconnectedness and relevance of all things, striving to depict each subject with intrigue and detail. His preferred mediums are diverse, including collage, material layering, and unconventional techniques like manipulating photocopies. He frequently uses crayons, pencils, pens, gouache, watercolour, inks, graphite, and markers. Over time, his line work has become more abstract and expressive, his colours more opaque and bold. Each piece is unique, alive with character and depth, free from the pressure of conforming to a singular style. Resourceful and innovative, Alfie creates art on any surface available—cardboard, scrap paper, calendars, packaging, stickers, and playing cards. His daily exploration of new artistic avenues is both a reflection of his early career stage and his relentless creativity. While he often grapples with anxiety over where to begin amidst a flood of ideas, he grounds himself with the mantra "make something today," focusing on present satisfaction over overwhelming ambition. Alfie's short-term goals include expanding his body of work and refining his concepts. Looking ahead, he aspires to achieve financial self-sustainability through his art and to disseminate his artistic philosophy widely. He envisions publishing multiple collection books and consistently producing copies of his work to share in public domains. A proponent of accessibility, he favours posters and prints over exclusive, framed pieces and seeks to engage in more street art projects, including murals and public installations. Through his art, Alfie aims to captivate and entertain while prompting viewers to perceive life more profoundly. His work engages in a dialogue with reality, leveraging his brave and anti-establishment approach to challenge norms and introduce fresh perspectives. By subverting expectations, he encourages others to rethink their realities, often through the sheer strangeness of his pieces. Alfie Wilson's overarching mission is to democratise art, breaking down elitist barriers associated with overpriced and pretentious works. He is dedicated to bringing beauty, eccentricity, truth, and authentic creativity into the public sphere, firmly believing that art should be normalised rather than confined within institutional walls.
